Big Swell Hits So Cal

December 6th, 2007

Hey surf fans! For those of you that don’t know, there’s a monster storm of the southern California coast and it pushed some big waves into the west facing beaches today. So I grabbed a big lens and went out to Malibu. I ended up at a place called Murphey’s near Point Mugu.

I got in a little while ago. It was pretty wild out there but I’m coming from a novices perspective. Not knowing all the ins and outs of surfing, from the looks of things the forecast was only true in some areas, west facing or not. I got some good location tips from a couple guys. I also learned some things. Here’s some tips when asking surfers questions. Either A. Don’t or B. Have a translator near by. The guys were really nice to me, unlike I’ve been told in the past. The problem was, that subculture has such a crazy lingo that I barely knew what they were saying. And heaven forbid as a male I ask for clarification or a definition. Are you serious? Also thanks to Louis Downey for giving me some tips on locations. I’m glad I started out going as far north as I did. Thanks man.

Anyway, here’s some of my first favorites so far. If anybody reading this surfs, let me know when you’re going out. I had a blast!  Enjoy!
